The Morris-Coole Prize
This new prize, awarded by the ILAE, is the initiative of Mr and Mrs Christopher Morris-Coole,
from London, who have endowed the prize. The annual prize of Euro 10,000 will be presented to the first
author of the paper published in Epilepsia during the preceding year which has, in the judges’ opinion, made the most
significant advance in knowledge in the field of epilepsy. The paper can report either basic or clinical findings,
and the papers in any research field or from any region can be considered.
The winner of the 2007 Morris-Coole prize is Dr Zita Gajda, Hungary, a young scientist working in the
laboratory of Prof Magdolna Szente, Department of Comparative Psyciology, University of Szeged. The
winning paper:“The functional significance of gap junction channels in the epileptogenicity and seizure
susceptibility of juvenile rats” focuses on the effects of drugs—antiepileptogenic and anticonvulsant—in
animal models of epilepsy. As part of her prize, Dr Gajda will present her findings at the Morris-Coole lecture at the congress.
